About Build a Squad
The story behind the World Cup fantasy draft simulator.
What is Build a Squad?
Build a Squad is a free-to-play World Cup fantasy draft game that lets you build your dream XI from 80 legendary players spanning 10 World Cup tournaments (1986–2022). Each round, you spin a tournament year, pick a legend from that era, and steal one of their signature skills to boost your squad. After 11 rounds you have a complete starting lineup — and then you simulate a final against one of history's greatest teams to see if your draft holds up.
Unlike traditional fantasy sports games that reward long-term roster management, Build a Squad is built for quick, decisive play. A full draft takes about three minutes. There are no points to track week-to-week, no transfers to manage, and no pay-to-win mechanics. You draft, you simulate, you share the result. Whether you're settling a GOAT debate with friends or just killing time before kickoff, Build a Squad gives you a data-backed answer in minutes — and a shareable result card to prove it.
Our Data
Player ratings in Build a Squad are informed by publicly available performance data from sources like Transfermarkt and FBref. We study tournament statistics, historical match reports, and advanced metrics to ground every legend in real performance context.
That said, our rating methodology is entirely original. We don't import or replicate any third-party rating system. Each of the 15 attributes per player is independently calibrated by our team to reflect what made that legend special in their specific World Cup campaign. The result is a rating set designed for competitive draft balance, not historical ranking.
